A look at the people and performances from the past two decades at the downtown Phoenix arts and music haven. By Benjamin Leatherman Weirdos have always been welcome at The Trunk Space over the past 20 years. The same goes for local artists, performers, musicians, creatives, colorful characters and others who are outside the norm. The DIY art space and music venue, which was launched in April 2004 by artists Steph Carrico and JRC along Grand Avenue just north of Roosevelt Row, has been a unique part of downtown Phoenix’s cultural landscape. Its served as a talent incubator that has fostered the sort of outsider art, experimental performances, unusual artistry, musical oddities or newbie bands not found elsewhere. “We enjoy things that are a definitely strange and outsider,” Carrico told Phoenix New Times in 2020. Countless burgeoning artists and acts have gotten their start at The Trunk Space, including such notable bands and performers as AJJ, Ryan Avery and Treasure MammaL. Hundreds of touring bands have also performed at the space over the past 20 years, such as indie duo Matt and Kim, punk icon Gregg Turner, folk singer-songwriter Kimya Dawson and electronic noise-rock act Quintron and Miss Pussycat. These days, The Trunk Space is located on the grounds of the historic Grace Lutheran Church and is a nonprofit venture run by volunteers and overseen by a 10-person board. It maintains its focus on art and music of an indie, unusual or outsider bent. To commemorate The Trunk Space's 20th anniversary this month, New Times has assembled a photo retrospective showcasing some of the people, performances and art events held at the venue over the past two decades. PHOENIX, AZ $8 / 7:00PM APRIL 25TH THE REAL COACHELLA: w/more info to come @THE TRUNKSPACE 1506 GRAND AVE. PHOENIX, AZ I attended Grand Ave. Live this evening. Which is a live talk show that happens every first Thursday of each month at the trunk space. It features local artists and weirdos, funny sketches, surprise guests and usually a musical guest each night JUST LIKE A REAL LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW YOU WOULD SEE ON TELEVISION! It was also originally hosted and created by me and was then called "grand ave. tonight!" but apparently when that became too confusing for the audience to understand so now it is "grand ave. live!" and is hosted by a way better and talented man by the name of Kevin Patterson and tonight i saw my first "episode" since i have returned to phoenix and i LOVED IT! Kevin does such a wonderful job, everything has good timing, nothing drags on, nothing is too awkward, he has amazing charisma.... jeez! i am so jealous! but i am also so happy for him because it is so awesome. When i hosted G.A.T. it was just this really weird and awkward giant performance art piece (pretty much) that i tricked people into coming to (which is true, on more than one occasion i tricked people into coming) But now its magnificent. And very (for lack of a better term) "legit" in my opinion. Anyway... its good and if you havent seen it, or think the whole idea is lame...you need to go and see it because it is soooooooo good! and you will not be dissapointed!
i interviewed my dad on grand ave. tonight yesterday. it was uncomfortable, but still pretty swell. jaime j. played. he was sexxy.
afterwords me and my pops got photobooth pictures. |
