Ryan Avery of Related Records is a staple of the Phoenix music scene and we are super excited that he has returned to the city after a short bout abroad (in Los Angeles). In addition to heading up the Related Records cast of oddballs, Avery is a musician and performer in his own right with acts like Fathers Day and Drunk & Horny when he isn’t busy throwing shows, promoting bands on his label, or documenting life in pictures for Disposable Babies.
1. Captain Ahab“I Don’t Have A Dick”
Captain Ahab Is one of my favorite bands to come out of the post-9/11 art punk scene of the early 2000’s and features my friend Jonathan Snipes who later went on to form the Hip-Hop group “clipping”.
2. James Kochalka Superstar“Finest French Soap”
James Kochalka is one of my most influential artists of all time. I feel really lucky to have discovered his music at such a young age and have it shape me and my own song writing abilities. This is from his last full length album which is called “Beautiful Man” and was released on Related Records.
3. Splinter Cake“Sugar And Me”
Tempe has always had a very tight-knit, fluid and “cool” music scene. Always changing depending on what’s the most current hip trend for college aged kids. I have never really been a “part” of this scene but have always appreciated and observed it for as long as I’ve been going to shows (almost 20 years now jeez!) and my favorite time musically was between 2005-2009 which is when all these brilliant experimental/folk/minimal-noise acts started forming (French Quarter, Foot Ox, Tent City, My Feral Kin, Businessman’s Lunch…etc.) But the artist who I feel made the biggest impact on me and definitely went the most underappreciated of them all was Splinter Cake. This song is one of his more straight forward/user friendly songs but if you dig into his catalog (if you are lucky enough to find it now that is) you’ll find such a prolific and brilliant scope of music and all of it is inspiring
4. Drew Danburry“Artex Died In Truth Or Consequences, NM”
For about 8-12 years Drew Danburry was one of the busiest and hardest working artists in the underground music scene. He is another artist who has a huge catalog of brilliant music but it’s mostly centered on pop. I put out a 3-cassette album for a new project of his last year called “The Funny Uncles” but this is my favorite song of his and I feel like everyone can enjoy it.
5. Songs For Moms“Come True (How They All Do)”
I booked a show for this band back in 2009. They played the Trunk Space with a couple of other punk bands, everyone played an okay set and barely anyone came. They were selling CD-R’s and had a few DIY packaged LP’s that they sold for cheap. It’s scenario I’ve seen and experienced SO MANY TIMES but there album “I Use To Believe In The West” is honestly one of the most played records I own. It’s just so good.
6. iji“NRVOUS”
This is actually an old Uggamugga song that iji covered for a tribute compilation to Tristan Jemsek that came out in 2011. I love iji and wanted to include them on this list but also love (pretty much) everything Tristan Jemsek does and wanted to include a song from both of them that is more obscure and so this is my own sneaky way of doing that.
7. Rotten Musicians“Eggshells”
This group I actually don’t know that much about. My friend B.C. Sterrett burned me a CD-R of this album of theirs because he was excited about it and he supplied some of the samples they use from his massive (and bizarre) record collection. But I love it and whenever someone asks me for a suggestion on something new to listen to I always suggest this group.
8. Quintron & Miss Pussycat“Spirit Hair”
It was really hard to narrow it down to one Q+P song. But I think this is the best example of their music and one of my favorite songs.
9. Realicide“The Shit Punx Hate Part 2”
Realicide is another brilliant and underappreciated post-9/11 art punk band from the early-mid 2000’s. Their music is very brutal, very raw and often terrifying. This is one of my favorite songs they have written about scene politics because I can definitely relate to feeling like a misfit in a room full of misfits.
10. The Dad“Shadow Babe”
Similar story to Songs for Moms I booked these guys in 2013 with some other punk bands, everyone was alright, barely anyone came, and they just had a couple cassette tapes for sale for cheap. This is from their album “Depression” which is easily the most played cassette tape I own. It’s just so fucking real and fun and simple, and this song in particular is catchy as hell.
White t-shirt on a hanger on the 6th street exit sign off the 110 freeway in Los Angeles. (sadly there is no photo of this)
Here is the track list for a Best of 2015 Mix CD I made.
01. Quintron & Miss Pussycat “Do The Raid” 02. Blur “Ong Ong” 03. American Monoxide “Harmless” 04. Lonesome Leash “One Foot In Front Of The Other” 05. Yairms “Citizen Vain” 06. Cookie Tongue “Remote Control” 07. Mary Ocher + Your Government “Dream X3” 08. Mia Loucks “Happy Halloween” 09. The Atom Age “Wasteoid” 10. Cumstain “I’m Not Mean” 11. Freaks of Nature “Hurtin’” 12. Soft Shoulder “No Occupancy” 13. Space Tourists “Wholefoods Stomp” 14. Butter Knifes “I’m Going To Call The Cops” 15. Bob Kooparos “This Is The New Shit” 16. Treasure Mammal “Miracles” 17. Supa Joint “Weed Money” 18. Hug Of War “My Best Friend From Outer Space” 19. Stitches “Molly Cyrus” Visiting Winslow Food Forest!
Dan’s “Living Room Tour” last year was incredible, and not just for the obvious intimate setting, mixed with close friends/nice people mixed with food…etc it was because I think Dan understood what so many other solo performers REALLY should learn and that is “say yes to the request!”
When I saw him perform last year in a backyard in Scottsdale, AZ, I would say 98% of his set list consisted of requests and he didn’t once say “sorry, I don’t know that one too bad” or “I don’t play ____ anymore because yada yada yada blah blah blah” like some sort of pretentious music snob who has outgrown their own music!!!!! he played EVERY SINGLE SONG that was requested and although he fumbled over a few of the words/parts of the songs it didn’t matter BECAUSE the people in the crowd wanted to hear it so they could SING ALONG! AND have a great night! One of my favorite things about 2014 was my friend Emily and I made up and started talking/hanging out again.
Photo by Gabriel King Radley Here are my top 10 favorite shows I went to in 2014
02-11-2014: Sweat Lodge w/Fathers Day, Wolvves, Dinosaur Love and Shawnte Orion @The Trunk Space - Sweat Lodge played 5 shows in Phoenix, AZ during the month of February I went to 3 of them. This was the funnest/best one. Everyone did an awesome job, Shawnte Orion took some great black and white photos of the night that you can see here. 03-11-2014: Mary Ocher w/Drunk & Horny, Man Cat, Beauty Secrets, Drunk & Horny and Hopehorse & the Grief Triggers @Filmbar - The Filmbar asked me to find local acts to play with Mary Ocher and that was not an easy thing to do, a lot of the most obvious fits couldn’t do it and it is the same month as SXSW which is a total nightmare, so with all of the artists I asked to play I made sure that they could also promise to provide an excellent one of a kind performance and take advantage of the amazing intimate theater… and everyone did something exceptional. I think the most stand out performance though was by Man-Cat. 04-08-2014: INDIE 500 DAY 10 w/Polka Dot Dot Dot, Stephen Steinbrink, Human Behavior, Straight Straws and Man-Cat @The Trunk Space - The whole Indie 500 festival was awesome, pretty much everyone brought their “A” game for all 10 days. But the final night I felt was the best. It was the first time I cried tears of joy at a show in years and it was during Polka Dot Dot Dot’s set which was so amazing. I wish they were still making music together. 06-15-2014: Fathers Day w/Snake Snake Snakes, SOAM, No Dice and Soft Shoulder @51West - This show was really really bizarre, it was the first time ever that I saw all of the different types of people who like Fathers Day interacting with one another and the result was a very bizarre/memorable night for everyone. I think actually most people who went didn’t actually like the show, but I definitely did. Also probably the most memorable SOAM performance ever. I honestly have no idea how he could ever top what he did that night. 08-11-2014: Cumstain w/Fathers Day, Wavelengths, Jawwzz and Button Struggler @Funny World - Every band played a short and high energy set, no fights, everyone donated, touring bands got paid, started on time, didnt run too late. Perfect house show in my opinion. 08-30-2014: Drunk & Horny Orchestra w/Jerusafunk, Dinosaur Love, Mercury Mines and Eli Kluger @Funny World - This was the album release show for Drunk & Hornys “Songs in the key of Stink” 7" and we played with the full 12 piece orchestra. Andrew was pretty sloshed but still held it together and did a great job. Jerusafunk was phenomenal, Dinosaur Love played to a tiny group of people who were hanging onto every word, Mercury Mines is a new band that got added to the bill as a favor to Jason Kron (who runs Funny World) and I was expecting them to suck but they didnt, they were really great! and I cant forget Eli Kluger who killed it with a short comedy set and on the 3-4 songs he sang with the orchestra. 09-08-2014: Mary Ocher w/Numb Bats, Hiccups and Drunk & Horny Orchestra @Filmbar - Mary Ocher’s quick (sorta last minute) US west coast tour/honeymoon show was also at Filmbar, didnt have nearly as many people as her other show earlier in the year but a much more fitting lineup, everyone did amazing and the Numb Bats especially played the tightest set I have ever seen them play. 09-16-2014: Clipping w/Treasure Mammal and Fathers Day @The Trunk Space - Fathers Days set was a lot of fun because most of the crowd it seemed had never heard us before. Treasure Mammal was epic! and Clipping was so inspiring and so incredibly loud and it was my first time seeing people mosh to hip hop which was pretty entertaining. 10-08-2014: Belle & Sebastian @The Orpheum - This show was originally scheduled to be outside at Civic Space Park (i think?) but at the last minute it was moved to the beautiful Orpheum theater because it was cold and rainy. Honestly wasn’t planning on going if it was going to be outside, the orpheum was so much better and totally amazing. Belle and Sebastian played for over two hours and played every song I wanted to hear. 11-21-2014: Man-Cat w/Treasure Mammal, Boss Frog and Pro Teens @The Trunk Space - I am so proud of the animals in Man-Cat, They provided so many extra things to their performance to make it an extra special experience for their album release show. Including a protest, brain washing video being shown by over a dozen television sets…etc it ruled. The Trunk Space was also packed and all the openers did great. My friend Tyler asked me to make him a mix CD of music from the year 1998 to give to him this coming saturday when his band Death Ray plays. He in turn is giving me a mix of music from the year 1999 (which is my favorite year of music… possibly ever)
anyway, here is what i put on the mix.
![]() ROBBIE PFEFFER Rubber Brothers has been so insanely active in the first 8 months it brings literally everyone else and everything else to shame. In less than a year Rubber Bros has already physically released over 30 tapes. Not to mention all the festivals/shows he’s organized this year. I know Robbie doesn’t do all of this alone, but hes still the guy who makes it happen. All I can say is, “Damn, I’m impressed” -JANUARY 20TH - Fathers Day, Playboy Manbaby, Death Ray, Naked Pizza and White Moss @Funny World
-JUNE 16TH - Fathers Day on Fathers Day w/Scorpion vs. Tarantula and Naked Pizza @The Guesthouse -JULY 20TH - Andy Hiller, Hi My Name Is Ryan, Yairms @Lost Leaf -JULY 25TH - Cult of The Yellow Sign, Drunk and Horny Orchestra, The Slow Poisoner, Space Alien Donald and Dinosaur Love @Funny World -AUGUST 30TH - Andy Kaufman and His Grandmother Listening Party @The Trunk Space -SEPTEMBER 1ST - “Let’s (House) Party.” Night One: w/Man-Cat, Fathers Day & Playboy Manbaby @Funny World -OCTOBER 22ND - Quintron & Miss Pussycat: w/Zzz and Fathers Day @The Trunk Space -NOVEMBER 2ND - “10 Years of Cumming Full Circle” Night Two: w/Andrew Jackson Jihad, Treasure Mammal, The Minibosses, Fathers Day, Playboy Manbaby, Hotrock Supajoint and Run-on-Sunshine @The Trunk Space I know Fathers Day played 5/8 of them. I don’t care. most of the shows i went to this year that didn’t include Fathers Day, were terrible. All of these shows listed above had the following things -Solid Lineup / Show Concept -EVERY artist kicked ass and played their best -Fun / enthusiastic audience / people in attendance were in the right state of mind to make the show one of the best. APRIL 13TH - Fathers Day’s set at Clusterfest 2 @ASU PV BEACH AMPHITHEATER - Fathers Day headlined this all day festival at ASU. Their was a bunch of jocks who were crowding the band and trying to start a fight. Douglas Patton made them look like fools and the band played great and all the kids in attendance had a good time. It was definitely one of the best Fathers Day performances of the year MAY 12TH - Drunk and Horny Orchestra @The Crescent Ballroom - We sounded awesome, played a really good tight hour long set which included lots of vaudeville-esque props and gags. It also felt really good to headline a show at the Crescent Ballroom and for it to be so well attended on Mothers Day. MAY 31ST - Jason Anderson @The Trunk Space - It had been a long time since there was a Jason Anderson performance in phoenix that felt like this, i mean whenever he performs it always gets people singing along, feeling motivated, feeling good…etc it this show was packed and their was just something extra magical in the air, after the show i heard from multiple people who said something along the lines of “man, i really needed that” and that’s exactly how it felt. it felt good like when you vent to a friend to the point where you are both crying and hugging it out. it was what everyone needed. AUGUST 15TH - IBN UBO @The Trunk Space - These guys ripped! their drummer was incredible, the vocalist was a real show woman and the guitarist was really intense. They definitely stole the show, everyone in the crowd was freaked out or impressed, not much else to say, they blew us all away. NOVEMBER 16TH - James Rabbit @The Trunk Space - The show up until James Rabbit played was good sonically but everyone was still stand offish and weird. James Rabbit broke down those invisible walls right away during their first song and kept the whole crowd moving throughout the rest of the night. Tyler took a group of about 20-30 individuals who all seemed like they didnt want to move and turned them into flying jellyfish.
