I could actually write an entire chapter in a book about the coolest people to ever exist, about him. But i wont. I could also write an entire "blog" entry about him... but i wont. But i will share with you some of the sweet videos he took from last nights show! This is literally the last minute of fathers day's set last night. Sadly not many of our fans were able to see it because we went on first and we usually go on later than 8:30pm. This includes the amazing Corey Busboom, which is why we only have the last one minute from our set. The song we are playing is the new "oncore song" its called "do the dad" and thankfully a lot of people got into it and so it turned out to be a success! This is the Coal Mine Canaries they played the show last night too. When I would tell people about the show I never mentioned the Coal Mine Canaries because I had never heard them, but they ruled, features Owen from Asleep In The Sea, Robin Vinning from Sweetbleeders, Mark from Colorstore and that tall guy from The Minibosses. Hopefully they do this again and its not just some bullshit stunt they did for this Treasure Mammal show because I would really like to see them again. Andrew Jackson Jihad did a really great set. And this is a 7:30 video from that set. It was the first time i have seen them since June, 2006.
It was a very eclectic lineup. Sadly i haven't found any footage from Treasure Mammal's set, or anything from Soft Shoulder and Fertile Crescent. But either way they all did amazing and i hope that if you don't know anything about these artists you check them out. So... non-show related good stuff is, James Fella gave me a big box of cool stuff i have missed out on while i was on my mission. Which is one of the coolest things ever! And i am so excited about a lot of it and i want to listen to it all at the same time, but i dont have enough record players and CD players to do that. So anyway... here is the list: CD: -BINGES "return to whatever" -GLOXHID CHRISTMIX 2007 "winter solstice" -HELL-KITE "5 song demo EP?" -JAMES FELLA "post/coast" -JAMES FELLA "salvaged tape" -NIGHT WOUNDS "allergic to heat" -RACCOO-OO-OON "behold secret kingdom" -SHEARING PINX "poison hands" -SHEARING PINX "ultra snake" -SIKED PSYCH "notnotfun compilation" -Z'S "buck" 12": -FOOT VILLAGES "friendship nation" -FRENCH QUARTER "self titled" -LITTLE WOMEN "teeth" -TENT CITY "drought" 7": -ABEVIGODA / MIKAELA'S FIEND "split" -BABY GECKO / SOFT SHOULDER "split" -FEMME COVERT / BLACK CAT #13 "split" -GEORGE MOSHINGTON "attack" -SABOTEURS -SHEARING PINX "haruspex" -SOFT SHOULDER "2 song 'hit single'" -WARBLER / BROMP TREB "split" -Z'S "arms" SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 29TH
TREASURE MAMMAL - http://www.myspace.com/treasuremammal FATHERS DAY - http://www.myspace.com/fathersday SOFT SHOULDER - http://www.myspace.com/softshoulderfromtempe ANDREW JACKSON JIHAD - http://www.myspace.com/andrewjacksonjihad FERTILE CRESCENT - http://www.myspace.com/thefertilecrescent @THE TRUNKSPACE (http://www.myspace.com/thetrunkspace) - 1506 NW. GRAND AVE. PHOENIX, AZ $7 (PLUS FREE 7") / 8:00PM / ALL AGES Last night was such a fun show @Rocky's Place. All the bands were a ton of fun and it went from 8:00pm to 2:30am. At midnight the cops showed up to turn the party off, because the show was happening in a residential area (next to an apartment complex) so we moved the party to Hood Ride which is this pretty cool place over on 5th St. and Roosevelt Rd. in downtown Phoenix that fixes up old bikes. The night started with a fun/silly performance by Ray Reeves and the Phoenix $uns and then Fathers Day played and tore the place up, trying to build hope in the hearts of young americans everywhere. After the Fathers Day set I headed down the street to Circle K to get some water (since the only drinks available at the house was beer) and i missed Bolt! but i heard them from outside the Circle K and they sounded awesome as always. Painkiller played a very joyful set that was more background music than anything but people still enjoyed it. Skinwalkers played a short 20 minute set that got everyone going crazy and having fun! and I think they are my new favorite local band, because the vibes and energy and music and show...everything is just so positive and fun. And if you haven't checked them out yet. You should. This is when the cops showed up and turned the party off. But only for a moment. Because soon everyone was over at hoodride enjoying The Hooves, who were fun. (lots of sleazy shuffle beats and sing along) And then the moment i know i was waiting for finally came but it almost became a disaster. Treasure Mammal showed up to play another one of his life changing performances and the people at Hood Ride (i think it was them but i am still unsure) turned off the PA system. All hope was about to be lost until Abe (T. Mammal) said "fuck it! let's party anyway!" and had the crowd join him in a two song accapella jam. Then some guy jumped on drums and started playing a beat very similar to "the Bambi Jam" so Andrew, Tristan and I got the bambi jam started with a handful of people, which later turned into "poop song #1". It all ended very abruptly and we all went home with smiles on our faces.
Fathers Day is jumping onto rocky (skinwalkers) sweet house show! and we are starting no later than 9:30pm. and there is going to be free pizza. and the show is free. and the bands are going to be amazing and ...jeez there really isnt an excuse you can give for missing out on this. so anyway here is the other details.
BANDS: -Treasure Mammal (AWESOME!) -Ray Reeves and the PHX $ons (AWESOME!) -The Tremulants -BOLT! (AWESOME!) -The Hooves -Skinwalkers (AWESOME!) -The Unfiltered Sound -Painkiller -Rapeworm the other bands i dont know anything about. but rocky has good taste in music so i am sure they are rad. so the show starts at 8:00pm and will go till whenever. and the address is "27 e woodward dr # 1 Central & Virginia( one light south of thomas) behind the Circle Kizzle"-Rocky kirby hayborn was there too. he is that guy from all those really awful "mormon" comedys like "the RM" and "singles ward" he told me the movie was really inspiring and awesome. and i could tell he was sincere
john heder was there too. he is that guy that played that one guy in that one movie remeber? and everyone quoted that movie forever and now you want to pierce your ear drum when you hear the title? yeah that guy was there. and i didnt talk to him.
so this weekend was all sorts of amazing/intresting emotions. and since i am trying to stay positive i will only list the good things. and hopefully make people feel great jealeous that they may have missed them.
-wayne micheal reich was at the screening on saturday afternoon and people hated him and he got really upset. -wayne micheal reich claimed that he was the "michealangelo" of the phoenix art scene and that i am a "beginner and a novice" and he doesn't understand how my art can be shown next to a "master" -when wayne micheal reich said "rule of thumb" the entire phoenix crew busted up laughing during the Q+A -first best friends performance in almost 3 years. (don't worry though it wasn't much we just sang our charles bronson cover) -impromptu hi my name is ryan performance in front of a bunch of drunkin idiots. -digital unicorn -go go 13 playing "hello, goodnight" -talking to parker for a while about how much the song "hello, goodnight" means to us. -selling pretty much all of my art work and making close to $400 off of it. -fathers day being the best house show band ever! and thrashing it up in peoples living rooms. -the mcdaniels -walking the red carpet in a beard, pajama pant shorts and sunglasses -talking my shoes off while on the red carpet so i can give people a literal answer to the question "how does it feel on the red carpet" -hanging out with colt bowden -getting sweet vinyl at amoeba -having andrew answer questions for me on the red carpet and telling people he was my manager. -sneaking into pictures/interviews of jeff goldbloom THURSDAY! NOVEMBER 6TH

just thought you all would like to know, so you can mark your calendars. september 6th, 2008... the day the revolution starts!
Here is a recap of all my last performances before leaving for a 2-year mission for the LDS Church.8/23/2006 08/19/06 - FATHERS DAY @the venue of scottsdale: we snuck our way onto the show opening for the aquabats. we played a 15 minute set. security was a bunch of jerks. sold out of cd's and lycd buttons/dvds/cds. almost sold out of fathers day shirts and 7". made $260 in merchandise.
08/16/06 - HI MY NAME IS RYAN @the trunkspace: didnt play until 4am. 7 friends, 4 members of the nourishment, 3 strangers, steph+jrc and my dad saw stayed to watch me preform. i played peek-a-boo, sang along to a mix cd and cryed a lot. 08/15/06 - NIGHT WOLF @the trunkspace: we played longer than any project of mine has ever played before. 1 hour and 20 minutes of night wolf. 30 minutes of that was the bambi jam. our set also included a ghost hunt, a sayonce [sp?], a cuddle puddle and lots of eskimo kisses. 07/21/06 - THE A.R.T. REVUE @four white walls: played in front of fww in front of friends and some drunk guy. 3 classic a.r.t. revue songs. we were able to make a handful of change. 06/24/06 - THE BEST FRIENDS @the trunkspace: it was a benefit for the trunkspace so they can afford air conditioning. it wasnt a scedualed last show but we decided that night that it was a perfect best friends set and that we should end it perfectly. 05/14/06 - IGGY POP @the trunkspace: two sets. both opening and closing the show on mothers day. we played in front of 12 people, one of our biggest crowds ever! jrc joined us and smashed a mailbox. before the show we ran through the bikini lounge in full gear, a sort of "noise parade" almost. a week and a half ago these film makers from utah read the new times article about me. and decided to make a documentary about me and my life the past few years pre-mission. they video taped my last few preformances and did a lot of interviews with me and friends and such. if i didnt get a chance to eat with you or hang out with you this past month, this has a lot to do with it. the film makers are coming back in a month or so to collect video tapes and pictures from shows and such i gave them a list of phone numbers for them to contact, so if you get a call from them thats how they got the number. and if you have pictures, videos, information that should be included in this film about me call them and let them know. 801-259-5151. i want them to have as much information on every aspect of my life as possible. yesterday i devoted an entire day to my best frien emily. it was wonderful, we ate a huge breakfast at "the place" and i showed her how to update thegoodshows.com and we watched the tom green show and reno 911. and we ate a fancy dinner at houstens with steph+jrc and andrew+tristan. ate some gelato. and got a sick photobooth strip. we put it in the trunkspace "yearbook" so go check it out next time you go there. also look for the "farewell" strip i made that i hid in the book somewhere. then a wonderful wonderful night was spent with bridget, but i will keep those memories to myself. today is my last day in phoenix for two years. i am spending it by getting packed and mailing off cds and getting lunch with jennefir lilly. if you want to say goodbye just "one more time" for some reason come by the willow house today around 4:00pm or so. i will be there for a bit. otherwise. see ya later livejournal friends. i will miss reading your journals and having wierd internet relationships with you. see ya later old friends. i will miss you a lot. see ya in 2008. -the premier of the new independent film "rocky road". written/directed by darren was a lot better than i expected. very enjoyable. i am excited to see the finished product.
-dangerville covered "coin operated boy". it was pretty awesome. its awesome that they know i am a dorky dresden dolls fan. i have been listening to amanda palmer solo demos all week. -brodie hubbard had the jemske boys back him up to create this weird but amazing brodie hubbard punk band. something i didn't think i would like but i totally did. -jrc did this totally awesome performance art piece with a giant mad-lib about me going on a mission. with text taken from the new times article. it was a lot of fun. -haunted cologne has a new direction which is much more mellow but still a lot of fun. they had a "christmas special" themed show. and in the middle of the set satan came to tempt me, but the angel of gabriel and a missionary came and saved me so it was ok. -the black jacket was really great. john kept saying it was sloppy but it totally wasn't. they improved a song about me which was totally amazing. and so many people came up to me and wanted to know more about them. -little jimmy was cute as always. i have only seen him read poetry one other time but both times he did a really super job! he is a very special kid. -iji was a lot of fun. i only got to see 2 songs though because people kept talking to me. i heard the fathers day cover of "my sons a gay" it was pretty rad. they are good dudes. -kevin patterson did a short performance of poetry and storys. including "people you shouldn't trust" which is one i always enjoy. i wish i would have become friends with him sooner because he is such a cool dude. -red pony clock was a lot of fun too. and it was cool to hang out and talk with some of them, they are some of the nicest folks i have met. a bunch of people came for them. -larry "wild man" fischer REALLY PLAYED! he brought the biggest crowd i think. it was my first time hearing his songs. and they were all so fun. and the more i hear about him the more into him i become. i love artists like that. -stacey gordon + tommy cannon did an amazing funducastion performance about dinosaurs. they are such brilliant people. -french quarter played outside by the dumpster. it was a really really really sweet set. made me get a little teary eyed. he played top of the food chain which was probably the highlight for me. -bill binder wore a star trek uniform and made himself puke! hahahaha. it ruined some peoples nights and made other peoples nights better. it was the coolest tribute i have ever seen. "this is for you ryan.... BARF!!!!!!!!!" -tent city played outside by the dumpster as well. they didn't have a tent or sheets. so it was tent city unveiled. it was weird. it kinda felt like they were naked. it was a really slow start. but then eventually you felt it. and it all clicked. and then it got to be really awesome and kinda loud and steph asked me to ask them to be quite because there is a house next door or something. it was really really good! -fathers day tried to play a five minute set. and i guess we did if you didn't include the honcore. but the honcore was about another 5 minutes. and it was probably our best set ever. everyone was into us and flipping out. it was a lot of fun. it ended with a dogpile on me! totally sweet! AND MY DAD WAS THERE!!!!!!!!! woah!!!!!!!!!! -the coitus did an ultra short set. like so short that you could miss it by going to the bathroom. it was good though and i am happy corey brought all of his stuff and did something for the show. -8 bit porno set was weird. we tried to do a coffee house noise thing. and it didn't work out because adams instrument didn't work so he just smashed and we all went nuts for a while. the whole thing lasted maybe 6 minutes. and it was probably so confusing for people that had never seen us before. -the children of hell were so much fun as always. they usually do something totally amazing and weird and "wtf?!" but they just played a normal set with all there discopunk jamz. until!!!!! they covered blondie!!!!!! and it was the cutest thing ever!!!!! like woah!!!! who knew the children of hell could be so adorable?!! i didnt! -jose gonzalas did a really fun mr. rogers impersonation that made me smile real big! -djentrification's [sound collage] was really really really sweet! alex is such an amazing artist. and really underrated. more people need to check him out. -the nourishment took a long time setting up but it was totally worth it. they played all the hits! and had a slide show! and each member did solo stuff! and PHIL LAWRENCE EVEN SHOWED UP!!!!!! ++special appearance by wild man larry fischer!!!!!! there set blew me away. and it was the best farewell present ever! -**THE LAST**hi my name is ryan set was good. it took a lot out of me. actually every last bit of energy i had left. i played a little game of peek-a-boo with myself then i cried about how much i love stuff. then i had a sing along with everyone with all these songs i have sang over the years. then i gave words of advice and cried some more and flipped out a little. then i sang hello, goodnight. and cried a little more. STATS: -number of people that payed to get in: 60 [exactly] -number of people that got in for free: 50+ -number of fathers day 7"s sold: 6 [only a 4-5 more test press copies left!] -number of pizzas eaten: 5 -number of hugs i received: 500+ [thats just an estimate] -number of unexpected kisses: 3 -number of times people said "i'll miss you so much!": 100 [at least!] -number of times a band or performer asked me when they go on: 40 -number of hours the show lasted: 9 overall the greatest farewell i could ask for. thank you everyone that came. so on the azpunk message boards there are a lot of "anti-ryans" and there is a whole thread about my article in the new times and how much it sucks and how much i suck.
here are some of the things said about me: "He and katie should hook up and do an Abbot & Costello or Laurel & Hardy comedy kind of thing....the could call it "The Slut & The Schmuck Comedy Review"" "Fathers Day might be the worst band on the planet." "I still don't see what's so special about this kid." "He's just "special" I guess? I have no idea. His "bands" or whatever are some of the most annoying shit I have seen in a while." "All he's really done is create an elitist "art" scene within our scene that only really appeals to his little group of friends. I doubt Arizona will suffer too much with him gone preaching the ever-insightful teachings of Joseph Smith for a year or two. We'll see, though. Calling him a "renaissance man," is almost criminal." "Attempts to pass that sort of goofiness and juvenalia off as art is why I don't like Grand Ave." "there are some talented artists who take the downtown community pretty seriously, and it seems as if these hyper-active kids wearing flourescent colours that put on novelty shows with extremely limited ranges and even more limited audiences at least five nights out of the week are doing them a pretty big disservice. I know that I, as an artist, wouldn't want to have my name associated with a community to which such a great percentage of the attention is paid to this particular novelty schtick (again, an issue of personal taste)... and I've heard similar sentiments expressed, with cringes, by other artists, some of whom I consider to have considerable talent, who, at the mention of Grand Ave, are immediately assaulted by mental images of whatever sort of screaming-kid performance-art debauchery that they had a few times accidentally wandered into... reading articles like that convince us to what extent we DON'T want to venture downtown." "I could never see what the hype about fathers day or night wolf or lycd was all about. I dont have anything against the kids, but the music i cannot stand. Its not new, its not crazy, its not shocking, its just recycled crap that any 4 year old can create." "that dude is a total fag. my boyfriend was reading the new times article and said he and andy milinokis have the same disease. but i think they're both still retarded, and i don't know who this guy is" "One time, I think at Polysics, Brian went up to Ryan Avery and his friends and said "Hi, my name is Brian, I see you at alot of shows and I just wanted to introduce myself." And they totally just shrugged him off. That incident basically cemented how I feel about that group of people." "I think it does discredit to other artists to have their work overlooked in favor of what is pretty much some kid and his friends giggling over their silly, sophomoric inside jokes and somehow selling it as "avant garde" artistry." "if youve seen one ryan band, youve seen them all." Fathers Day played this halloween show and we went as a 60's pop group and we kicked everyones ass! Then afterwords I took this photobooth strip.
hey everyone. after being in bands and preforming for 5-6 years i finally preformed at modifed!!!!!!!!! i dont think a lot of people understand how much this means to me. the band was fathers day! we got TWO HONCORES!!!!!!! but they wouldnt let us play the second one because we were too mind blowing!!!!!!!!! thanks to all of you that came. and saw us and thrashed and sang along and cheered. you really made one of the proudest moments in my preformance history.
