DAY ONE: we drove to las cruces in 4 and a half hours hoping/thinking we could make it in time to play a strangers engagement party at a winery. We didn’t realize there is a time difference when we crossed state lines so we arrived when it ended. But we got to play some songs for people at the after party which was filled with beautiful people and lots of dancing. Andrew and I felt like we were in a dream. At one point I said to Andrew “I’ve never felt so happy to see other people happy” it was strange.
DAY TWO: we woke up around noon and got breakfast burritos from Bosa Donuts (not affiliated with the Bosa Donuts that we love and cherish in Phoenix) they were filling and only cost $2.75 each. Andrew bought a 24 pack of PBR, I bought 3 gallons of water and we started drinking them immediately when we returned to the farm and began recording. While Andy Hiller set up the recording equipment we finished writing and arranging parts for four new songs and a bunch of covers then got right into recording. We started with our cover of GST mugwumps “I hope we break up” followed by rolling stones “what to do” and what I hope will be our next big original hit “sex addict”. Around 6pm we decided to get some food at a local taco shop that I can’t remember the name of, but they had great pork tacos and Chile rellenos. When we got back to the farm we recorded “get drunk and screw” it’s our only song that features percussion using vintage drum machines played by alhhla. And then a cover of “number three” by the adjusters. While recording it Andrew got bit by a spider on his hand and couldn’t play anymore. We got him some benadryl and our new transient hippie friends from New Orleans gave him some hippie oils and we had to cut recording short for the night. DAY THREE: we woke up at 10am and decided to not allow ourselves to shower, eat or freshen up until the recordings were finished. We recorded 3 brand new originals - “I love to lie”, “tempe town lake” and “handicap girl” first then moved onto a cover of TMBG’s “alienation’s for the rich”, Bangarangs “Network” and Ernie K-Does “cried my last tear” at that point we were completely out of tape and decided to call it a day. We finally showered and went to the delicious food co-op they have in town and ate giant sandwiches and smoothies. When we got back to the Farm we had to do some chores and help clean up a little bit and fill up all the water containers they have for the party show that was going to happen later that night. It was fantastic by the way! We played two sets including almost all the new songs we recorded the previous days. Most everyone seemed to enjoy them. There was also a wonderful magician who performed his name is Jaime “The Magic Guy” he did these card tricks that completely blew my mind. I still get chills just thinking about it. We sold a handful of records and a CD and got enough money in donations to cover the cost of gas there and back. I can’t wait for these recordings to be mixed and mastered so we can share them with the world, because I think they are the best thing Drunk & Horny has ever done. |
