One of the more odder tribute albums Related Records has undertaken is set for release on Saturday, October 11 (Yes, in the digital world, you don't have to wait until Tuesday for record store employees to unpack and stock the product). Ryan Avery's dysfunctional family band Father's Day has been around for 10 years and to celebrate they've contacted scores of bands like Treasure Mammal, Former Friends of Young Americans, Ray Reeves, the Phoenix Sons and Shovel to cover one Father's Day song. The caveat is that it is all the same song. More like a mantra really, it's a 55-second ditty that goes "Did I use the word divorce? It's called a separation." The compilation or at least the Facebook event, is entitled "It's Called a Separation: Father's Day 10 Year Tribute Compilation." Not since the "Best of Louie Louie" compilation where everyone from the Kingsmen to the Sandpipers to the Rice University Marching Owl Band turned their attention to that three-chord wonderment has one song been twisted and tugged into so many directions. I will disclose to you now, gentle readers, that I have taken a crack at this song myself and should this compilation ever sell in the millions, I will most assuredly go to jail. If that alone isn't incentive enough to check out this collection when she comes, let's go to the video tape. Here's a great live version of the song performed at Trunk Space in 2008. I love everything about this clip. The way Ryan has kids in the audience pretend he's their dad, the guy with the fake cottony white beard, the two girls trying to slow dance to this rant in a mosh pit and the way Father's Day do the song, step out onto Grand as if it were their backstage and come back to do an even more ferocious version of, you guessed it... -JANUARY 20TH - Fathers Day, Playboy Manbaby, Death Ray, Naked Pizza and White Moss @Funny World
-JUNE 16TH - Fathers Day on Fathers Day w/Scorpion vs. Tarantula and Naked Pizza @The Guesthouse -JULY 20TH - Andy Hiller, Hi My Name Is Ryan, Yairms @Lost Leaf -JULY 25TH - Cult of The Yellow Sign, Drunk and Horny Orchestra, The Slow Poisoner, Space Alien Donald and Dinosaur Love @Funny World -AUGUST 30TH - Andy Kaufman and His Grandmother Listening Party @The Trunk Space -SEPTEMBER 1ST - “Let’s (House) Party.” Night One: w/Man-Cat, Fathers Day & Playboy Manbaby @Funny World -OCTOBER 22ND - Quintron & Miss Pussycat: w/Zzz and Fathers Day @The Trunk Space -NOVEMBER 2ND - “10 Years of Cumming Full Circle” Night Two: w/Andrew Jackson Jihad, Treasure Mammal, The Minibosses, Fathers Day, Playboy Manbaby, Hotrock Supajoint and Run-on-Sunshine @The Trunk Space I know Fathers Day played 5/8 of them. I don’t care. most of the shows i went to this year that didn’t include Fathers Day, were terrible. All of these shows listed above had the following things -Solid Lineup / Show Concept -EVERY artist kicked ass and played their best -Fun / enthusiastic audience / people in attendance were in the right state of mind to make the show one of the best. APRIL 13TH - Fathers Day’s set at Clusterfest 2 @ASU PV BEACH AMPHITHEATER - Fathers Day headlined this all day festival at ASU. Their was a bunch of jocks who were crowding the band and trying to start a fight. Douglas Patton made them look like fools and the band played great and all the kids in attendance had a good time. It was definitely one of the best Fathers Day performances of the year MAY 12TH - Drunk and Horny Orchestra @The Crescent Ballroom - We sounded awesome, played a really good tight hour long set which included lots of vaudeville-esque props and gags. It also felt really good to headline a show at the Crescent Ballroom and for it to be so well attended on Mothers Day. MAY 31ST - Jason Anderson @The Trunk Space - It had been a long time since there was a Jason Anderson performance in phoenix that felt like this, i mean whenever he performs it always gets people singing along, feeling motivated, feeling good…etc it this show was packed and their was just something extra magical in the air, after the show i heard from multiple people who said something along the lines of “man, i really needed that” and that’s exactly how it felt. it felt good like when you vent to a friend to the point where you are both crying and hugging it out. it was what everyone needed. AUGUST 15TH - IBN UBO @The Trunk Space - These guys ripped! their drummer was incredible, the vocalist was a real show woman and the guitarist was really intense. They definitely stole the show, everyone in the crowd was freaked out or impressed, not much else to say, they blew us all away. NOVEMBER 16TH - James Rabbit @The Trunk Space - The show up until James Rabbit played was good sonically but everyone was still stand offish and weird. James Rabbit broke down those invisible walls right away during their first song and kept the whole crowd moving throughout the rest of the night. Tyler took a group of about 20-30 individuals who all seemed like they didnt want to move and turned them into flying jellyfish.
Here is a list of working titles for some of our new songs. photos from last nights party with sweatlodge and ray reeves at funny world. thetrunkspace: fathers day Last night Fathers Day played a show at the trunk space and kicked everyone’s ass. and someone stole my disposable camera. if you found it and thought “this is mine now” its not, its mine, go ahead and finish the roll, just return the camera to me when you’re done. please and thank you.
This is how I imagine every Fathers Day show. Douglas Patton being a loud, angry, jerk in tight pants and everybody having a great time.
Fathers Day playing live at the stork club in oakland, ca. its a shame there are no photos or video of this show because it was one of the funnest/rowdiest shows ever.
All of the shows were a success in one way or another. IN PHOENIX (AUGUST 4TH) - we played at the trunk space. we played second. we kicked everyone’s ass. lots of new people that had never heard of us before. we made lots of money from merchandise and raffle tickets thanks to treasure mammal. all the other bands played better than they ever did. IN LOS ANGELES (AUGUST 5TH) - we played a free bbq show at danger field 3. we played last. we kicked everyone’s ass. decent sized crowd. most of them had heard of us but not really heard us. we made enough for half a tank of gas in merchandise sales. the opener was some big shot guy from tim and eric awesome show great job who was some sort of tribute to early adam sandler. then the vampires played and they were adorable. then tartar control played and kicked everyones ass. but then we played and kicked everyone’s ass again. IN SANTA BARBERA (AUGUST 6TH) - we played at biko garage. we played last. we kicked everyone’s ass. very small crowd that had never heard us before. we made enough money for a tank of gas from the door and merch sales. the mothras opened. it was nice to finally see them. AJ said “what did you think of the show?” and i said “visually it was sad and dark, sound wise it was like diarrhea after you finish a juice fast, you are happy that you did it, but its still diarrhea”. the other bands were boring. we kicked their asses. IN OAKLAND (AUGUST 7TH) - we played the stork club. we played 2nd to last. we kicked everyone’s ass. the venue was 21+ so that sucked for ben (our new bass player) since he’s only 19. the crowd was decently sized. we made a ton of money from merch sales and $10 from the bar. the opening bands were loud and forgettable. we kicked their asses. everyone went completely nuts during our set. death ray closed the show. they were adorable and awkward but still really good. but we kicked their asses. IN ARCATA (AUGUST 8TH) - we missed the show because our gps got us lost in some scary woods off the CA-1 freeway. and we left Oakland late and their was a big fire just north of the bay area. so we got to Arcata at 1am and slept on the floor of our friend Quade from the band creepy marbles. who have sadly broken up earlier this year. but we still kicked everyone’s ass. IN PORTLAND (AUGUST 9TH) - we played at the waffle house. we played 2nd to last. we kicked everyone’s ass. the show didn’t start till about 9:45pm-10pmish? first band was Ojos De Vaca who played a short, sweet and creepy set. then we kicked everyone’s ass. then Child PM played and they were pretty good but i didn’t really understand their whole “concept”. IN BOISE (AUGUST 10TH) - we played at “the venue”. we played 2nd to last. we kicked everyone’s ass. we made a bunch of money from merchandise. the show was going to be at the 208 house. but was moved at the last minute to “the venue” after a really loud math rock/death metal show. the bands from that show were very polite, loud and boring. we kicked everyone’s ass and then during our hon-core the crowd kicked our ass. then Art Fad played and they kicked ass too. Idaho made everyone feel gross and the band decided that Idaho despite the nice people and the good/weird show is the worst place on earth.
IN SALT LAKE CITY (AUGUST 11TH) - we played at the underground. we played last. we kicked everyone’s ass. we made a ton of money from merchandise/the door and the show was even poorly attended. the opening band was the not only the worst but, the most cliche “rockabilly” i have ever heard, (though everyone did look really cute), secret abilities awkwardly rocked and rolled. B.C. Sterret (of the lost media archive) did some amazing puppet shows and performance art between acts and we kicked everyone’s ass. then Paul Eagleston (who made the film hi my name is ryan) payed for us to stay in a motel 6 in Beaver, Utah so we could get a good nights rest and kill 3 ½ hours of the 12 hour drive from slc to phx! |
